Emporium shop project Tokyo, Japan

Text by Sergio Calatroni

The Emporium Shop of Tokyo is organized as a select shop dedicated to the young fashion which grow continuously in Japan. The shop needs a new display scenery.
Single enviroment of 220 square meter is organized with 4 principal paths who start from the shop window which gives a total view of the shop interior.
The paths are the result of the position of several movable slanted walls, some of the wall have different thickness to serve as a cloth stand or merchandise display.
The wall doesn’t arrive untill the ceiling and the free spaces are left for the interventions by different media as, graphism, photography, art, video etc. The type of intervention will change sincronized with the change of the season’s collections.
The showing zone are created by the wall wave at the inside and outside of the walls, the spaciality is always differents, dipends of theirs torsions. That creates the sense of course like the labirinth who let the public to discover the marchandises.
All the employed materials for the commercial space are the combination of naturals and syntetic materials with the effect of the particular textures. The wood are the mixture of precious and not precious wood, and them aspects are left in the natural way.All the furnitures untill the small accessories are designed customized. The cashier is a geometrical solide with mixed-materials, and are composed by various modular and movable elements between them.
The techinic of the illumination exploit the most recent technology which regulate the light effect by the computer programming.
The inspiration of this shop design is to obtain the selling place with the flexible and interchangeable scenary from time to time, by the shift of wall-display and the redecoration summary of some elements in order to charecterise strategically the Emporium.

JS Bach Chamber Music Hall by Zaha Hadid Architects

Zaha Hadid Architects have built an installation at Manchester Art Gallery to house performances of music by Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
A translucent, fabric membrane stretched over a steel structure suspended from the ceiling divides and encloses the space, creating a stage, enclosure for the audience and passages into and out of the auditorium.Clear, acrylic panels suspended above the stage reflect and disperse the sound.
Created for the Manchester International Festival, the venue hosts a series of concerts which started last Friday and continue until 18 July. Concert details are on the MIF website.
JS BACH / ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS CHAMBER MUSIC HALL AT MANCHESTER ART GALLERY FOR MANCHESTER INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

Zaha Hadid Architects have created a unique chamber music hall specially designed to house solo performances of the exquisite music of Johann Sebastian Bach.A voluminous ribbon swirls within the room, carving out a spatial and visual response to the intricate relationships of Bach’s harmonies. As the ribbon careens above the performer, cascades into the ground and wraps around the audience, the original room as a box is sculpted into fluid spaces swelling, merging, and slipping through one another.
“The design enhances the multiplicity of Bach’s work through a coherent integration of formal and structural logic. A single continuous ribbon of fabric swirls around itself, creating layered spaces to cocoon the performers and audience with in an intimate fluid space.” said Hadid. The process of realizing the design involved architectural considerations of scale, structure and acoustics to develop a dynamic formal dialogue inseparable from its intended purpose as an intimate chamber music hall.
A layering of spaces and functions is achieved through the ribbon wrapping around itself, alternately compressing to the size of a handrail then stretching to enclose the full height of the room. Circulatory and visual connections are continually discovered as one passes through the multiple layers of space delineated by the ribbon.
The ribbon itself consists of a translucent fabric membrane articulated by an internal steel structure suspended from the ceiling. The surface of the fabric shell undulates in a constant but changing rhythm as it is stretched over the internal structure. It varies between the highly tensioned skin on the exterior of the ribbon and the soft billowing effect of the same fabric on the interior of the ribbon. Clear acrylic acoustic panels are suspended above the stage to reflect and disperse the sound, while remaining visually imperceptible within the fabric membrane.
Programmed lighting and a series of dispersed musical recordings activate the spaces between the ribbon outside of performance times. The installation is designed to be transportable and re-installed in other similar venues.
Pivotal to its function is the performance of the ribbon. It has been designed to simultaneously enhance the acoustic experience of the concert while spatially defining a stage, an intimate enclosure, and passageways. It exists at a scale in which it is perceived as both an object floating in a room as well as a temporal architecture that invites one to enter, inhabit and explore.

AKbank NV headquarters by dagli + atelier d’architecture

Luxembourg practice dagli + atelier d’architecture have completed the interior of AKbank NV’s Netherlands Headquarters in the Rembrandt Tower, Amsterdam.
The design focuses on the concrete core of the building, creating a sculptural scheme following the “windmill principle” - upper elements rotate clockwise, lower elements rotate counter-clockwise - leading visitors around the office.
Integrated storage for both visitors and employees act as landmarks around the core.
Here’s further information from architect Mathias Eichorn:
dagli + atelier d’architecture is a young Luxembourg based contemporary architecture and design firm.
This project is the interior design of the Netherlands Headquarters of AKBANK N.V. in the high-rise Rembrandt Tower in Amsterdam.
As concept for the design, the architects concentrated on the concrete core of the building and created a sculptural element. The element follows the core wall and generates swollen-out elements arranged based on the windmill-principle. Upper elements rotate clockwise, lower elements counter-clockwise.
The offices are arranged around the core separated with glass screens to keep the core element as a visual reference.
During the design process, it is most important to us to research the identity of our client, to analyze it and to merge it together with the architecture into a unity.
The building, the utilization and the identity (the image) of the client become one, the architecture with its shapes and colors transports must create a sovereign - professional image (representation) to the exterior. Thereby the value of the realty as well as the corporate Identity of the client gets boosted.
Designing the floor, we used the core with its original function, the vertical access, creating a self-contained sculpture that represents a visual benchmark and leaves the function for the users visible.
The materiality of the core object is generated with the use of horizontal stripes or bands that are bordering the object.
This bordering is amplified with slightly inclined square sticks. This combination of shapes and forms with its depth and different layers of material finally creates a fully self-contained object, the core object.
The sculpture starts inside the core with a self-illuminated logo-panel, dragging visitors to the lobby of the agency. From there it follows the complete 360° around the core wall and finally ends with another smaller logo-panel in the lobby.
The illuminated bands of the sculpture grow and swell at some places, following a wind mill like formation. The lower elements rotate clockwise, the upper elements counter-clockwise. The elements integrate cabinets in order to amplify the core sculpture’s guiding function throughout utility.
Therefore the biggest elements just next to the main and side entry integrate wardrobes for visitors and employees. Smaller elements all around the core provide room for archives and office supply.Through the use of these functions, i.e. taking off the coat as the first gesture entering the floor, the core object becomes subconsciously an orientation guide and benchmark.
At dagli+, we believe that a consequent design gives the firm with its employees the opportunity to identify itself through the design, which finally leads to a valorization of the realty.A consequent design means for us to create and develop an architectural concept for the building and the design objects. It is crucial to make this concept readable for the public.
That’s why we realized the AKBANK agency using the unitary color and shape concept, that generates with its neutral colors and shapes a modern-calm, sovereign organized impression.

The fusion of the corporate identity, the design, furniture and employees creates a convincing new identity of the AKBANK for the public.
